This vacancy is advertised on behalf of a Direct Payment user but the employer will be an agency who provide the support.

We are looking for dedicated and compassionate staff who are passionate about their job; enjoy delivering one to one support and who can build positive relationships with our service users. This post requires a personal assistant to support a lady in her late 20’s in her own home who has complex care needs. Her hobbies include watching TV, (programs like EastEnders/Coronation Street, Holby City, and The Simpson’s to name a few), collecting Charmed memorabilia, going bowling and the arcades at Teesside Park. Also she enjoys playing games like Scrabble and Dominoes.
Successful applicant(s) will be working independently on a 1 to 1 basis with the lady but will also be part of an ongoing established team. 

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Providing both p:ersonal and medical care during the day and occasionally in the night 
  • Using bespoke moving and positioning techniques
  • Using bespoke equipment when carrying out moving and positioning techniques 
  • Administering PEG for nutrition, hydration and medications
  • Administering C PAP (Nippy) machine for overnight
  • Daily tasks such as dressing, showering and assistance to the toilet 
  • Daily tasks also include maintaining the household, cleaning, laundry, housework and any normal day to day jobs.
  • Weekly physiotherapy where you can learn the ropes alongside a qualified therapist
  • Accompanying our client to appointments and outings/activities 

Hours: 24 hours shift pattern - 11:00am - 11:00am INCLUDING a sleepover.  Please be aware you will be required to give assistance at night. 
Shifts will include weekends, bank holidays, public holidays, Christmas, New Year. Extra shifts to cover  sickness or annual leave are often available 

Training: 21 hours of on the job training and shadowing will be provided.
 

Essential experience required as person has Congenital Muscular Dystrophy:

  • 6 months previous care experience
  • Medication administration
  • Personal care
  • Moving and handling

Desirable Criteria: Experience of PEG Feeding, Gastrostomy care (PEG), Any experience with complex neurological conditions.

Duties: The role will involve helping to get her bathed morning and evening and depending on shift to put to bed on an evening. The role will also involve assisting to clean her teeth, applying eye drops and lotions, changing her sanitary dressings, feeding medication and food through a tube with guidance from her parent. You will also be required to provide support with ensuring that the young lady’s bedroom is clean and tidy and kept hygienically clean at all times. There is also an element of social care involved in this position to help your employer to gain more independence in the community. You will be required to assist with going shopping, going to theatres and shows and other activities that will keep her entertained.

Hours: Mon – Fri – 8.00am – 6.00pm, Saturday – 12.00pm - 6.00pm, Sunday - 12.00pm - 6.00pm 

However, hours and shifts can be flexible to cover the 72 hours support package between several staff,  Holidays and days off can be shared.

Although the service user has no challenging behaviour, his disability traits are centred primarily around issues with un-expected loud music and noises so a PA who can speak firmly to ensure his well-being is essential.  Although he is incontinent he can tend to his own personal care needs but when he is in the community, he may need support or prompting to ensure his personal hygiene is well adhered too.

Duties: To support the young man during shopping trips, visits to the bingo, walks and support when he visits ‘Belong’ at the Game store.  He loves eating- out, visiting the seaside for fish, chips and ice cream and using the slot machines. However, it must be noted that his knowledge of the use of money is limited so he shall need to be supervised with this, along with his road safety and pavement awareness.

Hours per week: 4, possibly increasing to 8

Essential Criteria: Non-smoker, able to support the young man with his interests (as described and X box), must be honest and able to use own initiative. 

Desirable Criteria:  Experience of working with people with a learning disability. Share similar interests as the young man. As the service user has a mobility car, driving license is preferred but not essential.
